FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE 2002-2004
Is the title for this piece of work, and it is the first in a series of five pieces of work that are all related too each other in as much that there is a member of an English Progressive rock band featured on each individual piece,This band went through various names such as “The screaming Abdabs”, the Tea set and sigma six though they were primarily a singles with hits such as “see Emily play” becoming the darlings of the London underground scene in the late 1960’s, their lead singer over indulging on LSD and eventually leaving the band to live as a recluse in his home town of Cambridge The rest of the band went on to have massive success with albums such as “Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall” Becoming one of the biggest selling, most influential bands of the last 40 years. For more information on the band and their history please refer to other work by the same artist entitled “Thank you.”
Apart from women of which something shall be written about later on. Perhaps the strongest theme in this piece and recurring throughout is the strong theme of death even the title suggests such “From the cradle to the Grave.” The image used on this canvas to symbolize that thing called death is the guy holding a hang mans noose is from an article regarding the Ogoni tribe of Nigeria and their ongoing struggle against Shell oil and the exploitation of natural resources and abuses of human rights in their homeland.
Anyway rather than write huge amounts of stuff here about who and what is displayed here which would take an absolute age and is actually rather unnecessary. It is said one picture can speak a thousand words and saying that apart from a who’s who of whats featured here enough has probably been said.
As was mentioned earlier this was originally started and intended to be a single piece of work to pass the time during a period of change If anybody had made mention that there would be continuation into several other pieces of work all related to this one, there would have been loud laughter and words similar to nonsense being uttered. It took 4 years to realize this unforeseen dream as subsequent work shows.
For years before I even considered being an artist I collected loads of old magazines and similar stuff not on any particular subject matter and never for any particularly good reason well the reason was their just not realized at the time. For all that collecting and collating there is now an extensive piece of ready made and recycled art.
During the time all this old paper was in my possession I would read and re-read all those old articles and magazines some of some of this old stuff would and did adorn my bedroom walls here is more than just old pieces of paper stuck on a canvas, here is part of myself and has been part of my living and my breathing for a long while with some of the material used having been in my possession for 15 years or more before my knowing what to do with such. As a consequence of this keeping much time though in essence actually very little was given to reading and re-reading that which had already been read.
Take for example “I believed in the fuhrer” it runs down the right hand side of the canvas you cannot miss it. This article came from an article in the British newspaper “The Daily Telegraph.” It regarded a certain Henry Mettleman who served in Hitlers army during WW2,his book Through hell for Hitler is interesting for what it has to say from the perspective of the ordinary soldier who sees the folly of what he is serving the hard way. This item found it’s way here from a flirtation with right wing politics then I lost my faith. which is not the reason why Pope John Paul 2 appears here.
On a different subject Sophie Dahl was recovered from a copy of the Daily Mail the pictures from an article regarding the dress sense of the French and how a girl would always check her stocking seams to be straight.
Its not only news print here there is one photocopy of Syd Barrett sent to me by a friend in Bulgaria, thank you my friend you know who you are it’s something to remember you by, and a small handmade painting of a heart cut out and made by myself.
Upside down bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey the brew from Lynchburg Tennessee, that is mellowed drop by drop through ten feet of charcoal for that distinctive smoothness Mr. Jack first used this process over seven generations ago and the same process is still used today. You can see a picture of Mr. Jack Daniel again on the right hand side and there shall be something more written about him and his product later on.

Why the hamster, well this was story about a small furry rodent that died after a balloon burst I guesses it died of shock, actually the story goes a bit deeper than that, and for the answer you will have to speak to Leire.
Syd Barrett has his image on this work a couple of times or so due to the influence and legacy he left behind even though he ceased to be musically creative pretty well almost thirty years ago, without him the world would be a poorer place though in saying that he passed away in 2006 his memory still lives on. David Gilmour was a childhood friend of Syd and replaced him in the band when the latter succumbed to mental ill health, Gilmour plays guitar just like his friend did and their contribution is celebrated elsewhere in work by this artist.
The first image to be put down here was that of Ian Curtis of Joy Division who had a voice described as holy, and more shall be written about the person who said that further down the line
The Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader to the worlds Buddhists and his use of non-violence is a shining example to everyone, this particular image was taken from an interview entitled “Between a rock and a hard place.” in London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, the article was by a Nigel Farndale who does not feature in my work even though I am sure it could be arranged.

There are a few members of the musical fraternity here and each one of them has left their legacy and legend on this earth and whatever people say, they all died at the right time and that is why their names live on indeed some of them are still alive.Frank Sinatra gets a place here cause of this the song played as I picked out the picture I might say I was not looking for it at the time it just happened to be there and the music was a simple confirmation that I was supposed to use it there and now.
Saddam Hussein “how long can the man in black hold on to power.” It comes from a news article on the man,if you look closely you can see a rifle butt tucked into his shoulder which is pointing upwards at Mr. Jack Daniel who’s birth date is debated and is generally accepted to be in September and because of this the whole month is given over to him, one thing is certain he died on October 9th 1911 after kicking his office safe which resulted in a broken toe that went septic and which eventually killed him. Mr. Jack is buried in Lynchburg town cemetery where he founded the nations oldest registered distillery producing a sour mash whiskey that is completely different to Bourbon whiskey.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a
theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron. “I should like to write more on this man at a later time.”
